That is a terrible comparison first off.
Second off this post screams “whatever I don’t need to get good, it’s ~my own style~, screw anatomy you guys it’s how I draw”
You don’t need to study life drawing to be able to draw
You DO need to study it to be able to draw GREAT
If you don’t understand how basic human anatomy works, it will show in your works, and if you never study life drawing then how the hell will you be able to understand it?Using refs when “needed” is all well and good but if you don’t practice from life then your refs will look like shit when you redraw them because you don’t understand HOW to draw from refs. You should be practicing drawing life more than you should imaginative if you want to build up your skill. If you don’t, then guess what hun, you just don’t want to put in the hard work and effort.
If it wasn’t important then art courses in colleges wouldn’t even have them. But guess what *gasp* they do!!!You actually learn a buttload from them and my anatomy has improved a ton since I’ve started life drawing in college, I’ve learned a lot. There are people in my course who never even drew before coming into it, and I’ve seen a TON of improvement in them too. They’ve only been doing it 3 months.A classmate of mine argued that one time, she wouldn’t draw in the life drawing class and her excuse was “I can draw cartoons well”. Our tutor said she has to be able to draw people in order to become an animator, and if she’s not willing to do that/doesn’t know how, then she should think about doing something else.If you think it’s not important then you are deluded and if you think it won’t increase your skills rapidly you are even more so. You should build up your skills from life. Study. THEN stylize once you know how it works.Thinking you don’t need to do that is the attitude of a poor and lazy artist.

^^ This!
